Prof Douglas R Tocher
Professor of Molecular Nutrition
Professor Douglas Tocher has a BSc (1979) and PhD (1982) in Biochemistry from the University of Edinburgh, Scotland. He worked for 16 years for the UK Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) at the Institute of Marine Biochemistry, Aberdeen (1982-1986) and the Unit of Aquatic Biochemistry, University of Stirling (1986-1998). His main research interests during this period were fish lipid and fatty acid metabolism including embryonic and early larval development, and cell culture studies on eicosanoid metabolism, polyunsaturated fatty acid synthesis and neural development. In 1998 he joined the Institute of Aquaculture, School of Natural Sciences, University of Stirling as senior lecturer and was awarded his personal chair in 2009. His current primary research interests are the molecular biology and genetic basis of regulation of lipid and fatty acid metabolism and nutrition in fish, with particular focus on omega-3 (n-3) long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LC-PUFA). He is currently PI of a BBSRC project on the development and application of novel plant oilseeds enriched in omega-3 LC-PUFA to support sustainable development of aquaculture. Professor Tocher has co-authored over 300 scientific publications. He is a member of the European Federation for the Science and Technology of Lipids (EuroFed), American Oil Chemists Society (AOCS) and the European Aquaculture Society (EAS), and the editorial boards of the journals Aquaculture and Fish Physiology and Biochemistry.
